Carl Hansen
Carl William 'Skomager' Hansen became Denmark's first ever professional footballer when he signed for Scottish champions Rangers, leaving his first love Boldklubben 1903 (B1903) in November 1921. His injury hit football career took him from Copenhagen to Glasgow and back again, gaining international honours along the way. After his playing career was over, he became a renowned coach and manager, becoming the Danish national team manager in 1952.
During the Nazi occupation of Denmark, Carl was captured by the Nazis and held prisoner for several months. His book 'i Tysk Fængsel' (In German Prison) is about his time in Nazi captivity, held prisoner for several months in a number of prisons across Denmark and Germany – his torture and mistreatment; his frustrations, his rage, his concerns for other prisoners and his earning desire for freedom.
Following publication of his book 'Our Rangers Heroes', which included Carl, Ian Hogg wanted to translate Carl's book, written in 1945 and first published in 1946 (publisher Martins Forlag, Copenhagen), into English and release to bring Carl's words to life in the 21st century.
This is the outcome.
